Description

This Country Fried Chicken with Gravy recipe brings classic Southern comfort food to your table. Crispy, perfectly seasoned fried chicken breasts are paired with a rich, creamy homemade gravy, making an irresistible meal perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken and Coating

  • 1 lb chicken breast, cut in half lengthwise
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder for seasoning chicken (to taste)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp steak seasoning
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 large egg

Frying

  • 2/3 cup oil (for frying)
  • 2 tbsp butter

Gravy

  • 1/3 cup grease from frying chicken
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Cut chicken breasts in half lengthwise to ensure even cooking. Season both sides generously with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to infuse flavor.
  2. Heat the Skillet: Place a skillet over medium heat and add oil and butter. Allow both to heat until hot and butter is melted, creating a perfect frying base.
  3. Mix Seasoned Flour: In a bowl, combine flour, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and steak seasoning. This will be used to coat the chicken and give it a flavorful crust.
  4. Prepare Wet Mixture and Dredge Chicken: Whisk together milk and egg. Dredge each piece of chicken first in the seasoned flour mixture, then dip into the milk and egg mixture, and again coat with the seasoned flour to create a double-layered crust.
  5. Fry the Chicken: Carefully place the coated chicken in the hot skillet. Fry on each side until the crust is golden brown and the chicken is cooked through, about 6-8 minutes per side depending on thickness.
  6. Make the Gravy: Remove the chicken and reserve about 1/3 cup of the frying grease. In the same skillet, whisk in 1/3 cup flour with the grease to make a roux. Slowly stir in 3 cups of milk, continuously whisking. Cook over medium heat until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve: Pour the creamy gravy over the fried chicken and serve immediately for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • Ensure chicken pieces are uniform in thickness for even cooking.
  • Use a thermometer to check chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) internally for safety.
  • For extra crispiness, do not overcrowd the skillet while frying.
  • Leftover gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
