Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 1½ cups unsalted butter, room temperature
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp almond extract
- 3½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp salt
Coloring and Decoration
- Purple gel food coloring
- Black gel food coloring
- Purple sprinkles
- ½ cup black or chocolate sprinkles
Instructions
- Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the room temperature unsalted butter and powdered sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, ensuring a smooth base for the dough.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in the eggs and milk gradually, beating until the mixture becomes smooth and uniform in texture.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the all-purpose flour, salt, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms and all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Divide and Color Dough: Split the dough evenly into three portions. Tint one portion with purple gel food coloring, leave one plain white, and color the last portion with black gel food coloring, kneading each until the colors are uniform.
- Roll and Layer: Roll out each colored dough portion into rectangular sheets. Layer the dough rectangles on top of each other starting with black at the bottom, then white, and finally purple on top. Sprinkle purple sprinkles and black or chocolate sprinkles onto the top purple layer for added texture and color.
- Form the Log: Roll the layered dough tightly into a log shape, ensuring that the layers stay intact to create the signature spiral design in each cookie.
- Slice and Bake: Using a sharp knife, slice the log into rounds about ¼ inch thick. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them evenly. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
Notes
- Make sure the butter is at room temperature to achieve a smooth and fluffy dough.
- Use gel food coloring for vibrant colors without altering the dough consistency.
- Chilling the dough logs before slicing can help maintain clean spiral shapes.
- Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
- For a nut-free version, omit almond extract.
